The 28th Annual Chili Fest took place on March 1st, 2025 on Old Saybrook’s Main Street. The Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce puts on the event in the beginning of March each year, where local businesses and chefs compete to create the “Best Chili”, voted on by the public. The Chili Fest is a way for the town to raise money for pressing issues, and to get the community involved and united. All of the proceeds this year support the Chamber of Commerce’s C. Wilfred Hunter Memorial Scholarship for graduating high school seniors planning for their future after high school. In addition, the top three winners earn donations to the charity they are supporting. The Chili Fest is an excellent way to support local restaurants, local charities, and a great winter activity!
This year’s top three (out of 28) include the following: 1st place Gladeview Health Care center, 2nd place Red house, and 3rd place The Essex.
In OSHS, people have contradicting opinions on this town tradition. While some value the tradition, others do not care about attending. Senior Abby Laskowski said, “I didn’t go because I had plans and I’m not a fan of chili. It’s one of my top 3 least favorite foods.” Junior Michele Sapozhnikov went for the first time this year and said, “It was really crowded but everyone looked like they were having a good time even if they were in a long line.”
Whether students at OSHS are annual Chili Fest attendees or have never been, the value and tradition it holds to Old Saybrook is strong. The event will be taking place again next year, celebrating their 29th year!
