With the arrival of spring’s eagerly anticipated warmth, Old Saybrook High School’s athletes are readily dusting off their sports equipment for another season. Spring sports at OSHS consist of boys and girls lacrosse, baseball, softball, boys and girls tennis, outdoor track, and crew.
Boys lacrosse senior captain Liam Roberts discusses what he is most looking forward to with the upcoming season and says, “I’m looking forward to picking up where we left off last season, growing as a team, winning games, and having a good time.” When further asked about a goal of his for the upcoming season, he responded with: “I look forward to exploring our team’s strengths this year, and hopefully leading our team to another shoreline championship.”
Demonstrating the team’s readiness even more, Roberts added that the lacrosse team plays an indoor league in Montville against other high school teams. Roberts also said, “We also get a lot of guys to get out on the turf and play together.” Essentially, this training and bonding will translate to better performance on field, something Roberts aspires to develop in his teammates. “I think it’s best to try and reach teammates on a personal level, which often comes from shooting around on the field together,” said Roberts.
As well as boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse senior Cali Morelli is happy that the girls team is having many familiar and brand new faces signing up for lacrosse. Morelli even mentioned that their “team has doubled in size” and she is looking forward to “the opportunity to play with new and old players.” Similar to the boys team, the girls have played in an indoor league and have had captain practices in preparation for the upcoming season.
In addition to the excitement surrounding lacrosse, many OSHS athletes are taking their bats back out. Baseball captain Vince Bibisi is looking forward to the upcoming season, saying he looks forward to a successful season “with a lot of wins and multiple contributions from the team as a whole.” When asked about how the team improved in the off-season, Vince claimed, “The team had a lot and worked on their pitching skills. More importantly, the team had speed workout and team lifts on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.” As a captain, Vince understands the importance of motivation and hard work. He also acknowledged the importance of team unity, and stated, “I try to get the team in the batting cages as much as we can. Anytime me and the other captains go to train, I like to invite them to come with us so that they can get better.”
