With only a month of school left, many seniors have to make a big decision: What college will they be attending? So much to choose from, whether it’s staying in Connecticut for UConn or moving down south University of Tampa. What is decision day to begin with?
Throughout the nation, many seniors follow the tradition of making their final decision of their secondary school on May 1st, choosing their future on a single day. With Old Saybrook, according to the oshsdecisions2025 instagram account run by senior students, the most frequent college that was chosen was UConn. Furthermore, there were many different colleges that multiple students went to, with Quinnipiac, University of Vermont, and University of Delaware being prime examples of 2 students going to the same school. To celebrate this day, senior students wore merch from their chosen school that day and gathered together before school started, unifying seniors to showcase their decision. However, what other colleges did students decide on besides UConn and others mentioned prior?
For Matthew Makris, choosing a college such as Clark University in Worcester, MA was a no-brainer for him, stating that “it was a change of scenery from Old Saybrook, and I felt the school resonated with my interests personally.” Furthermore, Makris expressed that he was “very happy” with this decision, and that he’s already started talking to people who are attending Clark this fall “who are extremely kind and funny.”
Moreover, deciding where to go for Senior Hallie White was easy once she had visited Flagler College. The warm weather and close proximity to the beach were all huge pull factors for her, with her saying “That’s where I’m happiest, and I wanted to pick a school I’d be happy at.” On top of that, she also believed that going somewhere different like Florida, as well as being in a small historical towns down there would be beneficial to her growth, sharing that “My dorm actually used to be a hotel built by Henry Flagler in the 1800s (Ponce de Leon Hotel), having electricity installed by Thomas Edison before the White House.” White reflected on her final decision, concluding that “I’m super happy with my decision since this was my #1 college choice; It’s perfect for me!”
However, when it came to choosing a college down in the South, Senior Owen Courtright struggled with finalizing his decision, bouncing between University of Texas and University of Florida. Courtright wouldn’t decide until a few weeks prior to Decision Day, stating that “I chose University of Florida due to the combination of good academics the school offers and the financial package I received from them, as well as the intriguing student life they have.” At the end of the day, while it was a hard decision for him to make, Courtright expressed that “I am very happy with my decision and I can’t wait to be there!”
