If you’re looking to improve your school spirit, there are a lot of easy ways to do so. Have you been to an OSHS sporting event this year? If so, were you following the theme? Whether the theme was black out or neon, it’s always fun to dress up with your friends and follow the dress codes so be there and be square.
OSHS’s fun themes for Friday night games allow for students to feel like a part of their school community, while supporting their OSHS rams. Being engaged in their school community is proven to increase students’ academic performance. This is due to the social stimulation students receive after attending these events.
Our athletes are important, but what’s a game without a roaring student section? Many players greatly appreciate when they look over to the sidelines and see friends and family members supporting them. Varsity soccer starter Claire Cassella states, “It encourages me to do better on the field and the rush of adrenaline pushes me to exceed my goals.” Seeing more people at their games often increases their drive and motivation on the field, and leads them to experience a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment. The fall season is a great time for students to show their school spirit. Fall sports include boys and girls soccer, field hockey, football, and boys and girls cross country. For such a small community, this leaves students with many options when it comes to attending games. Different games will be fun for different people. For example, if someone is interested in making new friends and expanding their bubble, a Friday night football game is a great idea. Because the team is a co-op consisting of Old Saybrook, Westbrook, and Morgan, students from all three schools can come together to show their spirit. Although you might see it as unimportant and cheesy, many adults look back on their highschool experiences as one of the best moments of their life. Some students may not want to attend these games now but in future references those students may regret the decision of not attending.
