The Light House Cafe, OSHS’s cafeteria, has a new manager this year: Ms. Ng.

Before joining the OSHS faculty, Ng owned a restaurant for 18 years with her husband. She decided to transition to cafeteria work using her knowledge from the restaurant business, because as she says, “the restaurant business is crazy.” Since then, she’s worked in the Norwich and East Lyme school systems as a substitute and general worker. She ultimately switched to Old Saybrook because of the open position for cafeteria manager.

Now she helps to run all things food. In this position she will supervise and coordinate activities relating to the receiving, cooking, and serving meals for students. She places the orders and makes sure every student gets the same sized portions, no matter their place in the lunch line. Ng also takes note of what the cafeteria needs to change, in order to better meet the needs of Rams.

This is her first time managing a high school cafeteria, and while she enjoyed working with elementary students, she shares that she was pleasantly surprised in her first month at OSHS. “I was nervous to work with high schoolers,” she says, “but the students here are polite.”
