This winter, a new chapter of Old Saybrook Boy’s Track will begin with new Head coach Jared Stevens. Coach Stevens, who currently teaches technology education at Jared Eliot Middle School in Clinton, has almost a decade of experience in coaching track and field.
Familiar with coaching track, Coach Stevens felt compelled to apply for head coach mainly because of his relationship with the current Girls’ Track Coach Peter Capezzone and the Old Saybrook Track Team’s great status in the Shoreline. Coach Stevens said, “I have known Coach Cap since I started coaching in the Shoreline and we have formed a great relationship. He and I share similar coaching styles and expectations and I feel like this [coaching job] will be a great fit for me.” Stevens also acknowledged the prestige and status the Old Saybrook track program holds. He stated, “The other reason I came to the Old Saybrook program is the lineage of the program. The Old Saybrook track program year after year is one of the most dominant in the Shoreline Conference.”
Moreover, Stevens has had prior coaching jobs in Clinton, Connecticut. Though new to Old Saybrook, Coach Stevens stated, “ I have been coaching Indoor Track since 2015 at Morgan and …I have also been a Head Coach for Outdoor track at Morgan since 2016.” Furthermore, with this past experience as a coach at Morgan, Coach Stevens has developed a wide range of expertise at coaching the many different events under the Track and Field umbrella. Specifically, Stevens claims, “The areas that I am strongest in are the jumping events and sprinting events.” However, Stevens feels that through his experience he has developed the skills to be able to coach the sport as a whole and he is excited to bring this knowledge to Old Saybrook.
As Head Coach on the Boys’ Track team as well as an important member of the Old Saybrook Track and Field Program, Coach Stevens hopes to bring what he has to help the team improve and eventually win big. He states, “I’m hoping that my experience, passion, competitive nature, and hard work ethic will help to round out this already thriving track and field program.” Eventually, Coach Stevens hopes to help bring Shoreline and possibly State Titles to Old Saybrook during the Indoor and Outdoor Track seasons.
Finally, Coach Stevens shared his excitement and enthusiasm for the program and athletes. He stated, “I’m excited to start this new chapter of coaching and I’m looking forward to getting to know and work with the great athletes of this program!!”
