With Swell officially being open a week now, a good review was bound to come. We were ecstatic to write an opinion article on the new place and were even more thrilled to be able to give Rambler a true taste of Swell. Not only were we here to review, but we were also lucky enough to be able to interview the owner, Kameryn King, and get her inside scoop of the place!
We both ordered the “Locals Only” smoothie bowl and were pleased with our purchase. The combination of the fresh fruits, nutella, granola, and coconut flakes on top of the delicious acai base created the perfect bite. The acai had so much flavor it would have been enough on its own, but the add-ons, especially the nutella, enriched the bowl overall. Not just were we fans of the Locals Only bowl, but customers seem to be loving it as well. Kameryn shared it is their most popular item so far, saying people get it “with or without coconut, a lot of people take it off.”
On Main Street, it’s not rare to find a cute small business with a pretty name, but we personally think “Swell” takes the crown. When you first walk into Swell, it’s not hard to see the sign that reads “Live Well Eat Swell” which is creative on Kameryn’s part considering the background process she used to get the classic name. She comments on her creative process, saying “I had living well, eating well, and then Swell! It just kind of came out of nowhere.” The name couldn’t have had a better fit to the area considering the beachy feel, and the connection to Old Saybrook!
Along with the delicious food, the ambiance of Swell made our experience that much better. The cute decorations, beachy atmosphere, and feel-good music contributed to the overall bright and comforting environment that Kameryn has created. She says, “I want Swell to be a big community spot…If I see kids in here after school having fun, hanging out with their friends, doing homework, it’s important to me because it makes me feel like I have a good business.” We can confirm that Swell was a perfect place to hang out after school and do school work; Kameryn’s wish for a good business has been fulfilled.
All in all, our experience at Swell far exceeded our expectations and we recommend everyone to get a taste for them self. Swell was just what Old Saybrook needed, and we are happy to have been here from its early beginnings. Kameryn remarks, “The people who come in here make it special.”
