A Veterans Day tribute on November 11, 2024, in the auditorium at Old Saybrook High School was filled with emotion and respect. Students and teachers gathered to commemorate Veterans Day in an event designed to honor those who have served the country in the armed forces. The event not only provided an opportunity to recognize veterans but also to teach students about sacrifice, dedication, and the importance of military service.
For weeks leading up to the event, students worked diligently to bring it to life. History classes collected photographs and stories of local veterans, while music teachers rehearsed patriotic performances. The entire program focused on highlighting the stories of those who served and fostering a sense of gratitude and community.
As attendees entered the gym, they were greeted by an exhibit showcasing historical photos of local veterans and essays written by students. A prominent display featured a carefully unfurled flag presented by the school’s honor team, symbolizing unity and freedom. As the guests took their seats, the murmurs faded, and the ceremony began with a stirring rendition of the national anthem, followed by heartfelt speeches of gratitude.
Joseph Anastasio, principal of Old Saybrook High School, delivered the opening remarks. In his words, he emphasized the significance of the day: “It is a great honor for us, as a school, to recognize those who have served our country. The event offers us a unique opportunity to bring our entire community together to reflect on the sacrifices of our veterans and their impact on our lives.”
The event continued with speeches from Ellie Pennington and Cali Morelli, current seniors who have committed to enlist in the Coast Guard and Air Force respectively. Ellie said, “I want to be in the Coast Guard specifically because I’ve worked hard all through high school and I want to continue that in college, especially if that means I can go to one of the best engineering schools and serve my country. The Coast Guard is the only branch with the specific job of saving people and I want to be part of that.” Cali spoke about the importance of Veterans Day and said, “It acknowledges the past, present and future generations of people who sacrifice their lives to the 346 million citizens of the USA.”
For Anastasio, this event was not just a tribute but an invaluable lesson for the students. “It’s essential for young people to understand the hard work and immense sacrifice that veterans have made to protect our freedoms. By recognizing these contributions, we also learn about responsibility and service to others.”
The ceremony concluded with a special video featuring historical photographs and messages of gratitude from students. According to Anastasio, “I hope students walk away with a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices of veterans and a commitment to positively contribute to their communities.”
