Every year, Super Bowl Sunday includes a variety of events to entertain and keep interest throughout the afternoon to late evening, switching between different ads from major companies and industries to bringing in huge artists to get the stadium hyped up.
Many students from Old Saybrook High School have at least something they can look forward to: the actual football game, the halftime show, or even the Puppy Bowl. Junior Casey DeAngelo stated that “I’m excited to see how the team’s new players shape up after meeting each other in the Super Bowl two years ago. I also think the halftime show will be one of the best we’ve seen with Kendrick Lamar.” The halftime show included not just Kendrick Lamar, but SZA as well, who collaborated with Lamar in the past with songs like All the Stars and most recently, luther. Furthermore, when it came to the actual game itself, senior Owen Courtright stated “I’m excited to see if the Eagles can overcome the odds and beat Mahomes.”
So how did it go? The Eagles held up the first half of the game with 0-24, and by the end of the game, the Chiefs were too late to catch up with the final score being 22-40 overall, meaning that the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. As for the halftime show, Kendrick Lamar performed many of his newer songs from his 2024 album, GNX. On top of this, Lamar would also play some of his most popular songs to date, such as HUMBLE., Not Like Us, and All The Stars with SZA. There were many mixed opinions when it came to the halftime show, with junior Josh Roslonek saying that “It was so boring that I fell asleep.” While Roslonek might not have enjoyed the show, freshman Chris Serrano was head over heels, stating that “I was so excited because Kendrick and SZA performed All The Stars together, which is one of my favorites.”
As they are famously known to do, this year’s advertisements kept the at-home audience entertained during breaks. Some of Saybrook’s favorites were the Pringles ad and the Little Caesar’s ad according to Roslonek, who said that “the main ads I remember were the Little Caesar’s ad and the Pringles ad because they both had flying facial hair for some reason.” On top of that senior Hallie White stated that “My favorite ad was the When Harry Met Sally Hellmann’s Mayonnaise ad. That’s one of my favorite movies and they recreated the most famous scene and I thought Sydney Sweeney was the perfect person to say the iconic line, ‘I’ll have what she’s having.’”
However, while the Super Bowl may be the main event of this day, it doesn’t mean everyone was tuned in for it. For instance, senior Lexi Powers stated that she’d rather watch the Puppy Bowl instead –a separate game with over 140 puppies participating in a 3 hour event– saying, “I’m excited to get to watch the Puppy Bowl and support my team Fluff in hopefully another win against team Ruff as I don’t watch the Super Bowl.”
