The fall sports season is in full swing here at OSHS. From the exciting Friday night lights games to the mellow four o’clock games, the athletes have been giving their all this season. There are games everyday, whether it’s for boys or girls soccer, field hockey, football, or even cross country, there is never a dull moment this sports season.
The girls’ varsity soccer team at Old Saybrook High School finished off the first half of their season, winning six of their nine games, and tying the other three. The girl’s team played Valley Regional High School on Friday, September 26th. The final score of the game was 0-0. The team played in support of the non-profit organization Morgan’s Message. Morgan’s Message honors the life of Morgan Rodgers, a Duke women’s lacrosse player who died by suicide in 2019. The team held a bake sale, raffle, and a concession stand donating all the profit to the organization. Along with the sales, the players, from both Valley Regional and Old Saybrook, wore purple and teal ribbons in their hair, symbolic of Morgan’s favorite colors and brand logo. The girl’s team for Old Saybrook also wore teal socks. This was also the Capstone Project of Senior Captain Olive Egbert. Olive says, “The night was a huge success which makes me excited to do it again in the winter during basketball season”. The girls played Coginchaug at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 6th for their Senior Night game, celebrating their four seniors; Olive Egbert, Alex Levasseur, Olivia Stone, and Ashleigh Palmer. The night ended with a 2-2 tie after the celebratory day.
As for the Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team, their current record (as of 10/9) is 9-4-0. The team played Haddam Killingworth on Monday, September 29th. Although the final score was 2-1, with HK winning, the day was still something to celebrate. Before the game, the new scoreboard honoring the life of Old Saybrook community member Mr. Bourn was unveiled. The field dedication meant a lot to the players, as Senior Captain Casey DeAngelo said, “It is beautiful to dedicate a field to a man, who dedicated himself to each and every student and athlete at this school.” But this scoreboard gives them more, as Casey said “we have a reason to fight every game for a win, now more than ever.” They followed it up with a 7-0 victory against Portland on 10/2. The Boys, led by Head Coach Steve Waters, head into the end of the season with games against Morgan (10/10) and look to finish off their season against 2 out of conference teams, hosting their senior night against Suffield (10/18) and ending with Branford on 10/20.
Girl’s field hockey (as of 10/9) have a current record of 0–11. The team will celebrate two seniors, Kathryn DeMeulemeester and Emma Courtright, on October 23rd. The girls will play Norwich Free Academy at 4:30 pm. Felicia Lombard, a junior goalie on the team says, “Even though we are a young team, we are still trying to make the most of the season”. Lombard currently has 301 saves on the season and averages 23 saves per game. Field Hockey finishes their season away against Fitch on 10/11 and at home for senior night (10/23).
The girls and boys cross country teams have had weekly meets, with their Shoreline Conference tournament on 10/23. Junior captain Gordon Martino said, “We have a great group of runners… I am super excited for the tournament as I think we have a good chance of placing”.
