With the beginning of the school year comes exciting changes; one of the changes being a new club for students to debate, learn, and share their ideas! Hannah Belknap, a junior at OSHS, is the founder and club president of debate club. She was inspired to create the club after seeing the lack of opportunities for students to engage in healthy and exciting discourse in the school. She notes, “I personally love debate, and I wanted to share my passion for debate with my fellow peers.”
Debate club is flexible too, the topics can be as serious or lighthearted as students dictate. “Whether you’d prefer to debate about serious topics like the death penalty, or unserious topics like pineapple’s place on pizza, debate club is the place for you!” Hannah exclaims. Unsure if it’s right for you? Hannah explains that, “…Even if you’ve never tried it before, debate club is the place for you to explore what debate is, why it’s important, and also learn crucial skills.”
If you are interested in joining, talk to Hannah Belknap or Madame Zumbaum and Señora Vazquez, who are the club’s advisors, or pop into a meeting, which typically takes place on Thursdays at Flex. Finally, Hannah adds,“It’s always a fun time!”
