Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated around the country when families get together, feasts are prepared, and most important of all, thanks is given.. The tradition began in 1627, where the English settlers at the Plymouth colony held a feast between themselves and the Wampanoag tribe to celebrate their first successful harvest with the help of the Native Americans. The traditions of Thanksgiving have evolved drastically since that day, however one thing remains the same: the Thanksgiving day feast. Thanksgiving dinner is notorious for having countless different options, and sometimes it can be difficult to choose what to put on your plate. Here at Old Saybrook High School, our students have strong opinions on the best foods, whether that be platters filled with unique snacks or beloved classics.
Mashed potatoes is the favorite dish of OSHS students and teachers, often stating so without a second thought. Noah Nygard, a sophomore at Old Saybrook High School, describes mashed potatoes as, “as a soft, fluffy side dish that brings the whole meal together.” Another favorite was mac and cheese, a staple of the big thanksgiving feast. Another student, Brandon Flores, loves mac and cheese because, “it’s very cheesy.” There were also many other favorite foods from around the school, such as the main courses, turkey and ham, and other side dishes like cranberry sauce and stuffing. The dessert that the majority remarked as their favorite was pumpkin pie, because it is a classic and sums up the fall season into one dessert with its rich pumpkin flavor. Thanksgiving is a tradition celebrated by all for families to get together and more importantly, a time for everyone to experience the joy of a tasty thanksgiving feast.
