On November 17th, 2025, at 6:00, 30 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society at Old Saybrook High School. The National Honor Society is a nationwide student organization that honors high school students on their excellence in their four pillars, character, service, scholarship, and leadership.
At the induction ceremony, these values were expressed by the NHS veterans as they spoke about each new inductee, followed by the lighting of a candle by the inductee. These speeches were short, but packed with information about each inductee’s extensive community involvement. Mrs. Scherber, a faculty advisor of NHS along with Ms. Dionne, was satisfied with the event, saying, “I thought that it was a beautifully student run ceremony…[The] veterans did a wonderful job creating the introductions and really gave some thoughtful approaches.” Also during the ceremony, the inductees were invited on stage to light a candle and stand with their fellow members on the risers. Emily Clifford, a new inductee says, “I liked the process of lighting the candle…It made me feel really excited and I realized that I’m actually a part of the society.”
Altogether, the variety within the new inductees was seen through the different extra curricular activities and community service activities they are involved in. The inductees ranged from athletes to artists with their community service spanning from acting as a Counselor in Training at the Parks and Recreation to going to Latin American countries to provide clean water. Mrs. Scherber comments, “I think that there’s a lot of diverse interest in the NHS at this time, which means that we have a lot more variety and perspectives, which I think is always a benefit to a group like that. Especially as we start to design our community service projects.” Each year, the NHS members at OSHS create a community service project to benefit Old Saybrook. Mia Casertano, OSHS senior and Vice President of NHS says, “the project brings the club together and gets everyone involved.”
