February 2nd-6th is a week to give thanks to guidance counselors that are looking after students throughout their academic careers. With guidance counselor appreciation week being celebrated in Old Saybrook High School, it is important to note how crucial the role of guidance counselors is in students’ educational lives. Everyday, they are constantly involved in a variety of activities and responsibilities including attendance, course programming, the building schedules, individual student schedules, assisting students academically, social and emotional support and assisting students for their future endeavors.
Mr. Perras, one of two guidance counselors in OSHS, states, “School counselors play an important role in supporting students academically, socially/emotionally, and with career/college/future planning. Through students’ educational experiences, school counselors are there throughout every step of the way to ensure a positive experience for all students.”
Mrs. Rowe, the second counselor in OSHS, agreed with Perras when stating, ”School counselors have a unique role because we are able to support students academically, socially/emotionally, and with their career/college post-secondary planning. It’s great to be able to work with students and their families throughout their high school experience and celebrate the positive and support through the challenges – and everything in between!”
Mrs. Rowe and Mr. Perras work with students and their families everyday, which both counselors state is a highlight of their job. “It’s really enjoyable coming to work everyday where you can have strong rapport through trust and respect with the students,” explained Mr. Perras.
