The entrance has been redone, the walls are becoming grey, and the trophy cabinet has been stripped clean! These observations and many more have been floating around the student body since the beginning of the year as confirmed by student Alex Willson, “Why? Why would you do this? There’s no reason to do this so why?…It’s nice on my eyes, but it’s not good for keeping me awake.” It’s not just the students either, the teachers have noticed these changes too. Mrs. Durie notes, “There have certainly been a lot of new changes this year.” But what exactly is happening?
Everyone that has been attending Old Saybrook High School for at least 3 months has seen these new, colorful changes to the building. The changes that have happened so far include new, darker grey paint in the gym lobby and the main lobby. The trophy wall by the gym has been stripped clean and repainted blue and white. As for the main lobby, new carpeting and new decorations like benches and potted plants on either side. Finally, there’s a new, brighter set of lights in all three lobby areas: the gym lobby, the main lobby, and the auditorium lobby.
So, what happens now? Were those the only changes that will be made to the school? While not much is known about this project as of right now, some general questions and ideas have been answered by the associate Principal of OSHS, Mr. Plotkin, “Some of the feedback we got from students through forms was that the school needed a bit of a refresh to make it look newer or updated. The stuff with the new courses next year is also connected in some ways…” While Mr. Plotkin’s answers explained some things, more can come from the superintendent, Mr. Drezek, who knows the most about this schoolwide change. Since this project appears to be much bigger than a simple hallway paint job or lobby redo, at least from the students perspective, more information is anticipated to come soon.
