As the winter season comes to a close, so do the winter sports of Old Saybrook High School. The Shoreline track finals recently took place on February first, allowing the Rams to show off their skills. OSHS had multiple athletes place on the podium, one of them being junior Jameli Jara, who placed 1st in the shoreline on 55 hurdles. She has been working hard, stating, “we’ve been practicing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for states” she says. Furthermore, she has been practicing by herself in order to prepare for states by trying to improve her time. Another Ram that excelled in the Shoreline Finals was junior Gordon Martino, competing in both the 1 and 2 mile race. He fought hard for 5th place in both of them, securing himself a spot in States. He feels that the track team is preparing well for states. Martino states he is “tapering down, because you don’t want to do any hard workouts the week before your big race.”
On another note, the Girls basketball team is also on track for a successful year, with their season closing with a 4-15 record. During their recent Senior night, they honored their one senior, Olivia Stone, who spoke about how the girls team is doing so far. They currently only need one more win to clinch a spot in states. Olivia claims that the practices are going well and that they anticipate more wins towards the end of their season. She states, “Hopefully we get one last win against one of the teams on our upcoming schedule, it is very possible and I think we can do it.”
In addition, the Boys basketball team has officially made states for the first time in three years. The young group has managed to pull off a spot in states, with the shoreline conference in reach in just one win. The team has fought hard to achieve an 8-8 record, and are looking forward to improving their record in the upcoming games. Coach Perras states he is pleased with the team’s accomplishments, and is already starting to prepare the team for states. “I am very excited, especially after two bad years, it feels great to finally make it into states.”
Although the season isn’t over yet, Perras adds, “we are still treating every game like it is win or go home, helping improve and prepare the mindset of this young team for great things.“
