February 14th marks Valentine’s day, a national holiday focused on expressing love, affection, and friendship, which is done through different gifts, cards, or even romantic gestures. Many Old Saybrook High school students’ feelings on this day vary dramatically, whether people view the holiday as a nice time to spend with loved ones – or even as a holiday that is strictly for companies to get rich off of.
OSHS Junior, Oliver Grochowski, believes that, “Valentine’s day is a good chance for couples to hang out and have a fun day, but it’s kind of pointless if you’re not in a relationship.” This seems to be the way many think about the importance of Valentine’s Day, as OSHS Junior Dillon Blewitt similarly states, “It could be a good holiday if you’re in a relationship.” The idea that Valentine’s Day is important to someone in a relationship, but less important to someone who isn’t, seemingly trends among OSHS students.
Likewise, many OSHS students believe that the holiday is “overrated”, in one way or another. For instance, OSHS Senior Ashleigh Palmer states, “I do think it’s important but I think it’s unnecessary as a national holiday.” Despite the lack of significance to many, it seems that many students still recognize that Valentine’s day offers the perfect chance to spend time with your loved ones. OSHS Junior Sofia Taylor reflects this sentiment, saying, “I think a lot of people can agree that it’s overly advertised, but overall it’s a chance to show appreciation and love.”
Likewise, OSHS freshman Bryce Comboni states, “It’s a time for people to share what’s important to their loved ones.”
