Every year, colored bikes appear around Old Saybrook, spotted near sidewalks and street corners. They are a distinct symbol of May and the rest of Spring to come. However, to some students at Old Saybrook High School (OSHS), their purpose remains a mystery. Casey DeAngelo, a senior at OSHS noted, “Now that you ask me, I see a lot of bikes around town and I thought it was a coincidence.” A similar perspective was shared from junior Carmen Vercillo, who said, “I noticed the colorful bikes around town but thought they were just for Spring spirit.
While the bikes do provide a pop of color to Old Saybrook, they have a real purpose. They are placed open to the public eye to promote the Gardeners’ Market, which is hosted by the Old Saybrook Garden Club on May 16th, 2026 on the Town Green. Co-President Mary Costanzo shared that “all the bikes are donated to the club.” Per Costanzo, the goal for this year’s market was to support club activities and “contribute to our community projects.” The Garden Club is a non-profit organization with the mission statement, “Execute civic beautification projects, foster interest and expertise in horticulture, promote conservation of natural resources, and coordinate youth programs related to gardening, nature and conservation.” Their main event each year is the Gardners’ Market; in which they sell plants of all kinds, veggies, and baked goods! In addition to the Gardners’ Market, the club is responsible for library arrangements, the wreaths on Main Street, Common Good Gardens, as well as many other town garden displays. The Garden Club also works towards encouraging planting in Old Saybrook’s youth. They collaborate with the Acton Public Library and high school seniors who are working on their capstone projects.
Next year when the bikes roll out again, take a moment to appreciate their spirit and consider attending the Gardners’ Market later in the month for the 75th anniversary of the Garden Club!
