The Health Club Halloween Fundraiser held at the Old Saybrook high school on October 31st was a great way for clubs to get involved in the school, work together, and give back to the community, ultimately raising a total of $320.50. To encourage donation, clubs throughout our school were welcomed to participate in a pumpkin decorating competition. Each club/sport decided on a charity, and upon the club’s pumpkin receiving the most votes, all cash proceeds went to the clubs chosen foundation. When walking into school on Halloween, jars were displayed in front of each pumpkin for staff and students to donate towards their favored pumpkin. At the end of the day, the money was counted up, and whichever pumpkin held the most was declared the winner. The money from every pumpkin going towards the winning pumpkins desired charity.
This unique donation idea was created by the OSHS Health Club, a group where students work together in order to produce fundraisers and programs to benefit our school’s atmosphere. Ms. Martin, the adviser of the health club says that their goal is to help round our school in different dimensions of wellness. Fundraising in and out of school, this club does exceed the expectations for doing their part for the community. Ms. Martin adds that this group’s overall objective is, “Promoting all the things that make up a healthy lifestyle outside of just physical.” Therefore, this creative group came up with this fundraiser to bring our school together and enhance our inclusivity as a school.
The winner of this fundraiser was the Rambler’s pumpkin, followed by Health club, Unified, and the OSHS boys soccer team. The Rambler club chose to donate to the World Literacy Foundation, a non profit organization striving to make a difference in the lives of children around the world. Donating to this charity is helping this organization achieve their goal of allowing struggling youth to be able to receive literacy skills to reach their full potential in their education and in their life.
Along with contributing to a good cause, this fundraiser was able to spark creativity and competition. Each of these pumpkins displayed the result of hard work and collaboration from many clubs around the school. Every one of the 11 clubs participating in this event showed through the final result of their pumpkin the time and effort they each put into this project. Whether it was a pumpkin disguised as something else, or just used as a canvas for an intricate painting, these various ideas showed a major success. This entire fundraiser showed how much of an impact can be made when people come together.
