As always, nearing the holiday season, one question always sparks debate. Some are annoyed to turn on the radio a week before Thanksgiving just to hear Christmas music playing. Others are ready to hear it as soon as Halloween is over, but when do the students at OSHS think Christmas music should start playing?
According to a survey, there’s definitely mixed opinions on the question. From a survey sent to the OSHS student body, of 65 responses, 41% of students think that it should start in early December. 32% of students think that it should start late November, being a close second highest, and 12% of students think it should start mid November. The rest of the percentages were a mix of mid December, late October, early November, and year round, all being 6.2% or lower. Junior Chase Comboni voted for mid November. When asked why, his response was, “I like Christmas music and you know it feels like it’s ‘bout that time.” In contrast, another junior, Lucas Emanuelson, voted with the majority for it to start a little later in early December. He states, “I think that it should start in December, because after Thanksgiving, and the start of December, everybody puts out all their decorations and starts playing Christmas music. Any earlier and it would conflict with Thanksgiving, which is why I think it should start playing early December.”
Christmas music is such an important part of the holiday season, and it brings out the life of this time of year. Without the involvement of music during Christmas, it wouldn’t feel as magical. The holiday themed music reminds us of being with one another, fostering an important connection through the use of songs and familiar melodies. Even with the debate on the question, it’s clear that students at OSHS enjoy Christmas music, and it’s a large part of the holiday season.
