As Spring rolled around, a certain time of year at Old Saybrook High School (OSHS) arrived as well: Field Trip Season. Between the senior field trip, science trips and more, the students at OSHS are getting out of the classroom and enjoying a variety of trips to end off the year.
The Seniors celebrated their end of the year with a day in Boston. The class of ‘26 took the bus ride up to Boston, where they first stopped at the historic Faneuil Hall. Students were given time to look around the Hall, where they spent their time shopping at the local stores and eating at the markets. One highlight though was the amount of street performers. Charlie Dee stated, “There were a ton of street performers. They were actually really cool.” After wandering around and enjoying the historic area, the students headed towards Fenway Park, Home Stadium to the Boston Red Sox, for a baseball game. “I had never been to a baseball game before,” Chloe Young commented, “but I thought the American baseball experience was fun!” Although the Red Sox lost to the Atlanta Braves, singing Sweet Caroline as a whole class helped make the experience unforgettable.
The chemistry classes here at OSHS took a trip to the Connecticut Science Center located in Hartford. The classes explored the Center, and went through different exhibits such as sharks, butterflies and astronomy while engaging in different activities such as testing the durability of helmets, learning about conservative energy through interactive games, and a rooftop garden. Junior Chase Comboni stated, “I had a blast! I really enjoyed the interactive activities as I actually learned something.” It appeared that these students had a great time as they felt like little kids again. In addition to the exhibits the Center had, their 3-D movie theater was a big hit. The students viewed a 20 minute video about sustainability in energy as we approach the future. Junior Oliver Grochowski shared, “I learned a lot as we viewed the movie. Seeing all these different sustainable energy sources in the future was very cool.” The movie also dove into Singapore and their uses of solar panels to power their country. “Signapore is beautiful. I never knew they were so complex in their energy sources,” said Oliver.
The physics and chemistry classes took a trip to Lake Compounce, located up in Bristol, to apply physics skills to the real world. After working hard all year in class, actually being able to see properties of physics they studied was unique. The theme park was packed, and students got to interact with other students from schools all over the state. Junior Nico Sokolowski said, “Even though I took chemistry, it was a great experience being able to see a theme park and science in the real world.” Students had the opportunity to go on roller coasters, along with many of them highlighting how delicious the food was!
These field trips are more than just a day away from school. They are a chance for students to learn through real-world experiences such as visiting a science center sharing information about different topics or going to an amusement park to see how physics works in real functions.
