On January 31st, Old Saybrook girl’s basketball senior captain Breleigh Cooke, scored her 1,000th point in her high school basketball career. This is a milestone that will be remembered and acknowledged forever. Breleigh, known as Bree by her friends and teammates, is only the seventh girl in Old Saybrook’s history to achieve this milestone. Bree has been a Varsity starting point guard since her Freshman year for Coach Woods’ girls basketball team. After the girl’s three game losing streak this year, Bree needed 20 points in their game against Westbrook to reach 1,000. Bree started off strong with 18 points in the first half and her 21st point in the game and 1001st of her career came from a three point shot. Bree states that she “had so many feelings in her head immediately after she hit the shot”. Bree was greeted at half court by her parents, her older sister Mackenna, and her younger sister Emme, who is also a member of the basketball team. To top it off, the team also pulled off a 49-32 win against the Knights. Bree has been playing basketball for her whole life and has been looking forward to this day since Freshman year. She described it as “the biggest goal and accomplishment she has faced sports wise”. Bree has always loved basketball and hopes to join a club or intramural team in college. “Everyone in my life that supports me made this milestone possible, my immediate family, my amazing coaches, and my wonderful teammates that help and support me every day in practices and games”. With Bree being a 4-year starter, Coach Woods has been able to see her growth and watch her abilities evolve. According to Bree’s teammates, she is also a great friend and leader. “Even though Bree has only been a captain for one year, her leadership abilities have always been there. She makes me and all our other teammates feel included,” said Zoe Parakilas, a sophomore on the team.
